Delicious sea moss drink with coconut milk

August 17, 2021

Sea moss which is scientifically known as Chondrus crispus is a type of seaweed algae.

During my childhood in Dominica, I wasn’t a great fan of sea moss (seamoss) since I associated it with something very nutritious and adultish. However, on my most recent Dominican vacation, I got a reintroduction to it while visiting my relatives in the village of Vielle Case. I stopped at my cousin’s store to purchase some hot bakes. There I met this friendly guy who approached me. He introduced himself as Gibbons Benjamin and immediately started talking to me about his sea moss business, and the benefits of sea moss while retrieving a few bottles of the special drink from his vehicle. I was thoroughly impressed by his generosity and advocacy for this super drink.

When I returned to my village of Thibaud, I immediately started researching sea moss, and confirmed the many benefits that Gibbons had mentioned. Here are just a few of them: sea moss helps strengthen the immune system, promotes heart health, improves blood sugar management, helps with weight loss, among other benefits.

Sea moss is widely available in the Caribbean in the rocky parts of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and some other locations around the world. I was very fortunate that my sister, who’s here visiting me from Toronto, Canada, brought me a massive package of sea moss, which came straight from St. Lucia.

I decided to create this delicious, healthy drink with the sea moss gel and coconut milk. Since the sea moss gel is highly concentrated, I only needed a little sea moss to make a few glasses of this special drink.

Meet Mayma

Sakafete! Growing up in Dominica, food was central to socializing and in abundance. Cooking with my family was one of the highlights of my youth. We grew our produce and raised livestock, which often made it to our kitchen table. With my mother and grandmother's guidance, I discovered my passion for cooking at age 9. We used lots of verbal recipes then. Today, I share those culinary experiences with my children, using the fundamentals of Dominican cooking and making it our own. I'm not a trained cook/chef, however, as I embark on my food journey, I invite you to experience foods from the Caribbean island of Dominica. Let's cook!
