Shop enamel plates and cups

January 25, 2021

Yay! You can now shop Dominica Gourmet line of enamel plates and cups here!

I’m beyond thrilled to introduce Dominica Gourmet’s line of enamelware. Growing up in Dominica, enamel plates, cups and bowls, were a staple in most households. My grandmother had a comprehensive collection of the light green, yellow, and white types. A few of them my mother inherited and added to her own collection. The collection included quite a few with the distressed look. Back then, enamel plates could easily be recognized by their distressed look, or what we refer to as decayay.

The decayay plate, cup or bowl told a story about their life—where they’ve been, how much attention they’d received, and how folks engaged with them. As I child, I was extra careful not to drop the enamel wares. A drop would mean that they would leave a permanent story of a mishap of dropping a meal, or not being extra careful during the dishwashing process. The decayay or eye, was frowned upon. However, looking back, I see it more as a badge of honor.

Now enamel plates are not as common, and they’re pretty hard to source. When I prepare my dishes and present them, I’m often met with many questions about where I purchased my wares. As a self-professed avid sharer, I’ve provided countless links. For the enamel dishes, I wanted to be more involved in the process since it was very sentimental to me, they’re not widely available, in the right size or price.

I consulted with an enamelware manufacturer and designed the plates and cups. The process was straightforward since I knew what I wanted. We settled on the right size (cup big enough to hold a nice cup of hot cocoa), color, and design. My daughter designed the Dominica Gourmet logo, which is printed on the back of every dish and cup.

You too can own a piece of this nostalgic ware. Spruce up your table or your next meal with an enamel plate or cup from Dominica Gourmet. Shop enamel plates and cups on Dominica Gourmet!

Meet Mayma

Sakafete! Growing up in Dominica, food was central to socializing and in abundance. Cooking with my family was one of the highlights of my youth. We grew our produce and raised livestock, which often made it to our kitchen table. With my mother and grandmother's guidance, I discovered my passion for cooking at age 9. We used lots of verbal recipes then. Today, I share those culinary experiences with my children, using the fundamentals of Dominican cooking and making it our own. I'm not a trained cook/chef, however, as I embark on my food journey, I invite you to experience foods from the Caribbean island of Dominica. Let's cook!
